We use 15 and 20 lb. spin outfits on 7 foot rods, for our guided beach days and have not in thirty years of fishing down there found any reason to go
with the traditional heavy surf rigs. Most of the feeding takes place close to the beach and at times almost right up on the sand. For lures we throw
1/2 to 1 oz. crocodile spoons (I like pearl with a blue stripe) along with small hopkins and cast masters in the same sizes. For lures we like the
Rapalas in the fire tiger and perch colors. Top water plugs are great fun such as pencil poppers, Zara spooks and such similar types. Top water plugs are a great choice for fishing after dark. For bait fishing a small selection of #2 to 1/0 short shank live bait hooks for sardines and a few
4/0s for large baits such as mullet or caballitos. A selection of 1/4 to 1oz egg sinkers should round the folks out. If they are coming down in the
late fall through winter and spring some light wire leader is a good idea for the sierras.
The best beach fishing is at Punta Colorada either right in front of the Hotel, the points, dock area and in front of the first houses in light house estates. At Palmas and playa the Jacks and lady fish hang out around the dock and down the beach about 100 yards going south. The volley ball court,
further south to the rocks is also good at times. Not as many surf fishing options there as compared to Punta.
